Occupational Performance Coaching
Lorraine Welsh MSc, MRCOT, MVRA
Specialist Occupational Therapist, HCPC OT75035
A workplace assessment sets out what would help. Coaching is where those recommendations become practice, and stay in place. It is a separate service arranged directly with Lorraine, not part of a Return Well assessment.
About Lorraine
Lorraine is an MSc qualified specialist occupational therapist with over nine years of experience across inpatient, community and educational settings. She specialises in mental health, with additional training in neurodiversity, executive function, sensory processing and vocational rehabilitation.

What occupational performance coaching is
Workplace adjustments are easy to agree and easy to lose. Rotas change, workloads spike, a manager moves on, and the changes that were working quietly slip away.
Coaching closes that gap between a report and daily working life. It is a time-limited programme of six one-to-one sessions over three months, grounded in occupational therapy, that embeds the adjustments and builds the employee's own strategies for the long term.
How the six sessions run
1. Assessment debrief and manager alignment
Working through the assessment findings with the employee, then a three-way meeting with their line manager to agree expectations and confirm the practical adjustments.
2. Strategy deployment
One-to-one coaching on executive function tools and the sensory environment, testing adjustments in the real job and tuning them as they go.
3. Embedding and exit
A Workplace Performance Passport the employee keeps, so the strategies survive a change of manager or role, and a final check-in with the line manager to close the loop.
What coaching helps with
Coaching is shaped around the person and their job. Common areas include:
- Adjustments that were agreed but never stuck
- Cognitive exhaustion, sensory overload and burnout risk
- Executive function: planning, starting tasks, prioritising and pacing
- A sensory environment that works against the job
- Talking to a manager about what you need, without it becoming a difficult conversation
- Line managers who want to support someone well and are not sure how
- Staying well after returning from absence
- Neurodivergent employees who are capable but struggling with how the role is set up
What employers get from it
- Adjustments stay in place when rotas, workloads or managers change
- Early intervention, before cognitive exhaustion or burnout becomes absence
- Line managers get clinical insight translated into everyday management
- Evidence of a proactive approach to reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010
- An employee equipped to manage work friction themselves
After a Return Well assessment
A Return Well assessment sets out what an employee can manage and which adjustments would help. Coaching is where those recommendations become practice, rather than a list that fades once the report is filed.
Coaching is optional, and separate from an assessment.
Lorraine also carries out workplace assessments for Return Well. Where one of our reports recommends coaching, that recommendation is made on clinical grounds and never names a provider: the choice of who delivers it is always yours. Coaching is arranged and paid for directly with Lorraine, Return Well receives no fee or commission for the referral, and there is no obligation to take it up.
